12. SOUTHERN BRUSH REGION

Choke Canyon State Park:  McMullen County

South Shore Unit is located 3.5 miles west of Three Rivers on State Highway 72.
Calliham Unit is located 12 miles west of Three Rivers on State Highway 72 to TildenBoth Calliham and South Shore have a wide variety of wildlife living in dense thickets of mesquite and blackbush acacia.  The separate pond at the Calliham Unit is the best place for odes.

Espantosa Lake south of Crystal City and FM 1433:  Dimmit County

Espantosa Lake can be reached by going south out of Crystal City on US 83 until you come to FM 1433. Turn left.  The dam of the lake can be seen on the left before you come to the creek crossing. There is a parking area on left of the dam.  The best areas are below the dam and above the dam on each side of the lake.  You need to check out some of the legends that center about this lake.

Presidio Park on Bookout Lake: Dimmit County

This park can be found traveling south out of Crystal City on US 83.  Turn left on FM 1433.  You will go past Espantosa Lake on the left. Continue on FM 1433.  The road will turn to the north and back to the east and then again to the north.  After the last turn, the road to the park is on the right.  After passing through the plowed fields take the first road to the left into the park.  If you get to a gate, you have gone too far.  I have no experience at this site yet.  It looks good on google earth.
